44 questions on Bhoomi Vibhajan and Zoning

How are the 64 pad grid and the padas of each devta worked out?

Every pad grid divides the plot into equal sections, for example 81 equal sections for the 81 pad grid; the number of padas each devta occupies is then assigned within that grid. Drawing the devtas by hand will be taught practically in the 81 pad class.

In villages, big plots have a goshala and a small house. Is zoning done for the built area or for the whole plot?

Use the whole plot to locate the boundary wall gate and the goshala, and zone the constructed area for the house.

Is a balcony included in the constructed area when zoning?

Yes, if it is connected and fully usable. It is not treated as a cut or an extension; this will be explained later on a plan.

Does everything taught today also apply to an apartment or flat, or only to a kothi?

Everything taught today applies to flats as well, except bhoomi vibhajan. In a flat it is already done: the space left around the building during construction is its Pishach bhoomi. Ati marma, zoning and directions all apply inside the flat.

If bhoomi vibhajan is not done in a flat, is devta marking still done, given that the 32 devtas lie in the Pishach bhoomi?

Yes. Devta marking is done in a flat exactly as usual, also to judge the main door location. What does not apply is the rule of leaving the Pishach bhoomi empty: inside a flat the corners and side spaces can be used.

In a kothi with about 10 feet left open on all four sides, will the 32 outer devtas fall outside the house?

Yes, they fall outside the building in that open margin, and that is exactly the logic of keeping the Pishach bhoomi open. If the devtas were marked on the built part alone, you would again ask for its Pishach bhoomi to be left empty, which is wrong. Things placed on the walls of the built house fall in the Manushya bhoomi.

How are the bhoomi vibhajan ratio scales used?

Measure a line from the centre to a corner on the ordinary scale, say 11 cm. Lay the Pishach vithi scale with its zero on the centre and mark where it reads 11, then do the same with the Manushya-Dev and the Brahma vithi scales. The zero must always be on the centre.

If Pishach bhoomi is not considered in a flat, why draw it at all?

Bhoomi vibhajan is not drawn for a flat, and a flat has no Pishach bhoomi dosh, because the building already has open space left on all sides. So whatever you keep inside the flat does not create that dosh.

How are the 0.333, 0.555 and 0.777 bhoomi ratios derived?

In the 81 pad grid the line from the centre to a corner is 4.5 boxes long. From the centre, Brahma bhoomi ends at 1.5 boxes, Dev bhoomi at 2.5 and Manushya bhoomi at 3.5, and Pishach bhoomi runs to 4.5. Dividing by 4.5 gives 0.333, 0.555 and 0.777, which are applied to the real length of each centre-to-corner line on the map.

Is it necessary to buy the special scales for bhoomi vibhajan?

No. They are ordinary scales made in the 0.777, 0.555 and 0.333 ratios to save time. With a calculator, multiply the measured length by the ratio, for example 9.1 x 0.777 = 7.07, and mark about 7 cm from the centre on a normal scale.

Are the 32 outer devtas drawn in the Manushya bhoomi or in the Pishach bhoomi?

In the Pishach bhoomi, the outermost band. The 32 outer devta lines are drawn only within the Pishach bhoomi, while the 12 inner devtas sit in the combined Manushya and Dev band and Brahma in the centre.

Why is there no line between manushya bhoomi and dev bhoomi on the 81-pada devta map?

In today's 81-pada vastu the manushya and dev bhoomi are combined, so only three divisions remain: the pishach bhoomi with the 32 outer devtas, the combined manushya-dev bhoomi with 12 devtas, and the brahma bhoomi with Brahma. After dividing the plan with the 0.33, 0.55 and 0.77 multipliers, erase the middle line between manushya and dev bhoomi, since it is not needed for placing the devtas.

Why does each outer devta cover 11.25 degrees, and how are the pads marked?

The 32 devtas of the pishach bhoomi share the full 360 degrees, and 360 divided by 32 is 11.25. Mark North with the plot's actual tilt (for example 5 degrees), place Som devta centred on North with 5.625 degrees on each side, then mark every further 11.25 degrees with a protractor or a zoning chakra and draw those lines only in the outer ring. The 12 inner devtas follow an 18-54-18 degree split in each direction (27 degrees on each side of the direction line for the middle one), and Brahma sits in the centre.

When the house stands at the back of the plot with a garden in front, which centre is used to map the devtas?

Take the centre of the whole plot and map the devtas on it; all the open land around the house, even outside the building, becomes space for the devtas. This is why big houses abroad, as in America, are so balanced: about 4,000 sq ft is built on about 40,000 sq ft of land, so the 32 outer devtas get a huge, open pishach bhoomi and the manushya and dev bhoomi get cross ventilation from all sides. Just as a person given two acres of land enjoys the space, the devtas are pleased by big open land.

If only part of a plot is to be built, where are the devtas marked?

If construction covers only part of the plot with space left all around, the 45 devtas are allocated on the whole plot and their places are selected on it.

If the built-up area is on one side, such as South and West, with the other sides open, how are the pishach bhoomi and devtas found?

Use the angular method taught in class. Whatever the tilt and whatever the shape, octagonal, pentagonal or regular, find the centre, divide the plan into pishach, manushya-dev and brahma bhoomi and mark the pads by degrees as demonstrated, then practise it from the recording.

Some devtas sit in the outer paishachik ring and some inside. Which devtas do we treat inside the house?

Your own house also has a paishachik ring. In a flat, the band along the walls on all four sides (about 1 foot in the example discussed) is its paishachik bhoomi, so mark it with the measurement taught in the previous class and treat the devtas there.

Should the paishachik, manushya, dev and brahma zones be marked on the plot or on the constructed area?

Take the centre of the constructed area and mark the pads from it; part of the paishachik ring may fall just outside the house. For a new building, do the zoning of the whole plot for the boundary wall gate, and the zoning of the constructed area to mark E3 or E4 for the main door of the house.

When an office runs from one room of a residential apartment, is its entrance counted in the home's grid or is the office gridded separately?

It depends on the map. If the office has its own separate door, grid it separately, since its work and its door are separate, and grid the home separately too.
