41 questions on Colours in Vastu
What exactly is ivory colour?
Ivory is a very light yellow. Off-white is often called ivory, but do not choose plain off-white; true ivory is a very light shade of yellow. It represents the earth element, which is why ivory floor tiles generate so much energy in a house.
The North-West was given green as its colour, but the shakti chakra shows it in blue. Why?
The colour on the chakra is the colour of the devta of that zone, not of the element; the North devtas are shown in red, for example, which is not a colour to paint there. The air element has both green and blue as its colours.
Should each zone of the house be painted in the colour of its devta?
Colours are taught in interior vastu; do not get confused now and focus on what is being taught.
Can a bedroom be made at Shikhi (E1), and why should it be white rather than red?
Yes, a bedroom at Shikhi can suit elderly people, and it should be painted white rather than the zone's red colour, as advised for people of kapha nature and for those of pitta nature whose heat rises quickly. Shikhi is highly sensitive and already hot, so red would add heat and open the third eye.
Why is the colour of Bhrisha (E7) dark blue when blue is usually avoided in the East?
Where there is heat, coolness is given, and where there is cold, heat is given; heat added to heat burns things out and cold added to cold also ends them. It is like swar, where the cooling chandra swar should flow in the body while the Sun is up. E7 lies next to the fire (Agni) corner, so it was given blue.
If the colour of a small area in the earth element zone is changed, or an imbalancing item is kept there, does it affect the whole house?
Yes, it affects the whole house. Just as dirt in one room spreads its smell through the air to the other rooms, an imbalance in one zone spreads to the entire house.
Why do CAs and accountants use green ink?
Green represents Budh (Mercury), and finance and accounts belong to Mercury. Using the colour of the planet that rules the work strengthens it; even clothes and pen ink act as interior vastu, which is also why lawyers choose black.
Why do doctors wear green or blue aprons, and why do hospitals use green?
To keep Budh (Mercury), the planet of intellect, alert: if the mind or concentration slips during an operation, everything goes wrong. Green also nullifies infrared rays and bad energies, so hospitals mostly use green, pista, white and blue.
Why do some homes and businesses decline right after an expensive interior?
Because the interior changes colours, furniture directions, tiles and artefacts without regard to the owner's element and planets. Often the colours belong to the element opposite to the owner's, artefacts are combined wrongly, or harmful adhesives, lights and lead-based paints are used. One client who spent 60 to 80 lakh on an interior saw his loans turn NPA and his wife leave; his whole house had been painted in the colours of his opposite element.
Which element does the blue colour represent?
As a planet colour, blue belongs to Shani (Saturn); as an element, it represents the water element.
Why does the colour of the kitchen platform matter so much?
Eye contact is greatest with the platform, since rolling, chopping and all cooking work happen on it, so its colour works on the eyes and mind. In a wrongly placed kitchen the right platform colour alone can correct about 25% of the dosh: ivory for South, South-East, South-South-East and West-South-West kitchens; light red lakha granite for South-East and South-South-East, used sparingly because red stone comes only as granite, which develops pin holes; yellow for South-West and West; and green for South-East, South-South-East, South, North-East and North.
Can the kitchen platform be painted?
Yes, the platform can be painted, but the type of paint matters, which is explained in the topic of paints, pigments and colours. Never use oil-based paint.
Should black stone be used for the kitchen platform?
No. Black represents the water and space elements, and looking at black continuously weakens the eyesight. Tiny insects, bacteria and ants cannot be seen on black stone, so they get mixed into the food.
Won't a red platform in the South-East or South-South-East increase the fire element too much?
That is why perfect red is not used, only a light red such as lakha granite. Fire can be kept burning 24 hours in the South-East, so a red platform is acceptable there: the zone tolerates any amount of fire because the sun's rays in the South-East are not intense after 9 am, whereas hot winds (loo) come from the South.
Which platform colour suits a kitchen in the East-South-East?
Use green, that is light green or pista (pistachio) green, or ivory.
Which colour should the kitchen cabinets be?
Make the cabinets in the colours recommended for the kitchen walls and floor: ivory together with orange and pista green. A combination of these looks very beautiful.
Can pastel pink be used in a South-East kitchen?
Yes, pink can be used in a South-East kitchen, but only a very mild, light pink.
Can yellow be used in the kitchen?
Yes, yellow can be used in the kitchen, for example yellow furniture.
Can white furniture be used in the kitchen?
White is often said to be bad, but bad results from it have not been seen in practice. White is allowed in every direction; it represents the water element, yet many very prosperous homes use it, such as the white kitchen platform in the Ambani home. This advice rests on case studies rather than copied literature, which is why black, not white, is the colour named to avoid.
If the Ambani kitchen uses white in the South-East, why should others use ivory?
In that horoscope the Moon is exalted and forms a strong Gaj Kesari yoga, so white does not harm them; you should use ivory. A white platform alone does not make anyone rich, nor does a platform alone make anyone a pauper: vastu is not everything and nothing is greater than karma. Vastu supports those whose karma is good, and its four controlling factors are dravya, kshetra, kaal and bhaav (substance, place, time and intention).
How can I choose the colour that awakens my fortune for my bedroom if I have no horoscope or cannot read it?
Take a colour catalogue and turn its pages with your own eyes: the colours you are drawn to are the ones that awaken your fortune. Use that colour along with the colour of the zone you sleep in, and if possible match it with your horoscope; it usually matches. Sleeping steadily for eight hours in that colour lets its planet act on the whole body.
Should toilet tiles follow the colour of the zone?
They can follow the zone colour, but white or grey cause no problem in a toilet in any zone, because the toilet is represented by Shani and Rahu and here the planet is given more importance than the zone.
If the study table is in the West, can a red stone like jasper be kept on it?
Yes. A colour counts as an anti-element only when the whole room is done in it; an item of about 10 percent of the volume causes no dosh. Children do not stop using red or blue books, and women in red bangles or sarees still go into the North.
Should the deity's clothes follow the colour of the zone?
No, do not become obsessive about it. A small red cloth in the Ishaan does not put fire there; the effect comes only when the whole zone is made red. Nobody skips puja because they are wearing red clothes.
Is the black colour of a mobile screen also bad?
No. Only excessive use of a colour has an effect. Screens are black by nature and come in no other colour, so this is not a concern.
