Example from class: a heading of 2.39 degrees means North lies 2.39 degrees back to the left, toward the North-West; East then lies 87.6 degrees further on, and South and West follow at 90 degree steps. Drawing the same line in the opposite direction gives the reverse heading, such as 208.9 instead of 28.9; subtracting 180 gives the same result, so there is no fixed rule about drawing left to right.
A magnetic compass shows North directly through its red needle, but Google Earth and the mobile app only show the heading of a line, which is why students get confused between the two. Some basic laptop skills are needed.
