Method

Marking the 16 Zones on a Plan With the Chakra or a Protractor

Find the centre, draw a reference line, set off the measured tilt to get exact North, then mark 22.5-degree zones starting 11.25 degrees on either side of North, using the Geo Vastu chakra or an ordinary protractor.

What it does

Accurate zoning so that doors, rooms and objects are read in their true zones.

Samagri used

  • Plan of the building
  • 81 pad chakra (Geo Vastu chakra) or an ordinary protractor
  • Scale and pencil
  • Tilt reading from Google Earth, a mobile compass app or a physical compass

How to do it

  1. 1Find the centre of the plan; for a regular plot join the diagonals.
  2. 2Measure the tilt of the plot with Google Earth, a compass app or a physical compass, for example 10 degrees towards East.
  3. 3Draw a straight reference line through the centre, parallel to the wall whose degree you measured.
  4. 4Place the centre of the protractor or chakra on the centre and its zero on the reference line.
  5. 5Mark the tilt (10 degrees towards East in the example) and draw a light line; this is exact North.
  6. 6Mark 11.25 degrees on each side of exact North; this 22.5-degree area is the North zone.
  7. 7Continue marking every 22.5 degrees; with the chakra, align its red dot at N5 with exact North and mark the green lines, which sit at the zone boundaries.
  8. 8Draw lines from the centre through the marks with a scale.
  9. 9Name the zones clockwise: N, NNE, NE, ENE, E, ESE, SE, SSE, S, SSW, SW, WSW, W, WNW, NW, NNW.

Cautions

  • The North arrow drawn by the engineer only shows which side is North; always measure the actual tilt.
  • Every map has its own tilt (10, 12, 20, 25 degrees and so on); never assume one value.

Explanation and notes

For a quick check, place the chakra on the plan with exact North at zero and read off the zones, for example to see that a staircase falls in the East-South-East; for a proper drawing mark all the zones on paper. With the tool, the zone map and the pad map together take about five minutes. AutoCAD can also be used, but you still need to know where to place and how far to rotate the chakra. If Google Earth shows 350 degrees, the zero can be placed directly at 350, but thinking of it as a 10-degree tilt works from any side of the plot. Hilly areas make no difference to the method.

Principle

32 Outer Devtas of the 81 Pad Grid: 11.25 Degrees Each

The 81 pad grid, used for any house, factory, business or office, has 32 devtas (the 32 digpal) seated around its outer ring in the pishach bhoomi. One round covers 360 degrees, so each outer pad covers 360 divided by 32, that is 11.25 degrees, and half a pad 5.625 degrees.

Principle

Sixteen Zones of 22.5 Degrees and the Three Parts of Each Corner

Directions fall at every 90 degrees, the corner directions (vidisha) at 45 degrees and the zones at every 22.5 degrees, giving 16 zones. Each corner has three parts with different properties, for example Nairitya splits into dakshini nairitya (SSW), nairitya (SW) and paschimi nairitya (WSW).

Principle

North-East Zone: Clarity of Mind and the Place of Worship

About two hours before sunrise the sun sends ultraviolet rays into the North-East, which bring the greatest alertness to the neurons and glial cells of the brain. This pure energy suits the pure soul, so the North-East is the zone of clarity of mind and the place for worship.
