Principle

Choosing Wood for Furniture and Beds: Teak, Sandalwood, Sal and Asan

Teak is the best furniture wood, ideally with a little sandalwood mixed in and joined with wooden pegs or copper or brass nails. Asan wood drives away negativity and disease, while tendu must never be used and mango must never be used for a bed.

What it does

To build furniture and beds that support health, fame and long life.

Where

Furniture and beds throughout the home

Samagri used

  • Teak (sagwan)
  • Sandalwood (chandan), a small amount mixed in
  • Asan (asana) wood
  • Sal wood
  • Wooden pegs or copper or brass nails

How to do it

  1. 1Make furniture from teak and mix in a little sandalwood
  2. 2Join it with wooden pegs, or with copper or brass nails
  3. 3Use asan wood furniture to drive away negative energy and disease
  4. 4Choose sandalwood, sal or asan for beds

Cautions

  • Never make furniture or a bed of tendu wood
  • Mango wood may be used for furniture, but never sleep on a mango wood bed

Explanation and notes

A sandalwood bed increases dharma, lifespan and fame, which is why kings and leaders slept on them; sal is beneficial and asan ends diseases. Mango (sindhu) is regarded as very pure, which is why its leaves make the bandanwar for every auspicious function, and so it is not slept upon.
