Face-Like Main Door: Lamp Niches, Jharokhas, Tilak Symbol and Lips

Design the main door like a face: two shutters as the nostrils, two small niches as the eyes, two jharokhas as the ears, an Om or swastik as the tilak, and the threshold and upper frame as the lips. Ancient texts say such decoration multiplies the power of the main door many times.

What it does

Multiplies the power of the main door and keeps its defects from acting.

Where

Main door and the wall around it

When

Lamps on festivals, or daily

Samagri used

  • Two small niches (aale) on the left and right above the door
  • Two jharokhas (small windows) on both sides of the door
  • Swastik or Om at the top centre as the tilak
  • Dehleez (threshold) as the lower lip and the top frame piece as the upper lip
  • Small lamps with desi cow ghee for the niches

How to do it

  1. 1Make the main door with two shutters, the nostrils
  2. 2Build two small niches on the left and right of the door, the eyes
  3. 3Build two jharokhas on the two sides, the ears
  4. 4Make a swastik or Om at the top centre as the place of the tilak (agya chakra, raj tilak)
  5. 5Fix a dehleez at the bottom and a full upper frame piece, the lower and upper lips
  6. 6Light small lamps in the niches on festivals such as Diwali, Dussehra, Holi and Raksha Bandhan, or daily as royal houses did

Explanation and notes

The main door is the face (mukh mandal) of the house; just as a face has nose, eyes, ears, lips and a tilak, so should the door. Lighting lamps in the niches opens the eyes of the door, so the house keeps a right watch over everyone. When a door is decorated this way and small desi cow ghee lamps are placed in its niches, its defects do not act even if it stands in a less suitable place.

Main Door Must Have Two Shutters (Ida and Pingala Principle)

The main door is the door of fortune: like the two nostrils it draws nature-given positive energy into the whole house and lets negative energy out. Its two shutters stand for ida and pingala, the two breaths that alternate roughly every hour.

Testing32 द्वार पद

Locating the 32 Door Padas (E1 to N8) on a House Map

Divide the 360 degrees around the centre of the house into 32 padas of 11.25 degrees each, one for each of the 32 guardian devtas of the outer ring, named E1 to E8, S1 to S8, W1 to W8 and N1 to N8. The pada in which the main door falls tells its result.
