Purifying Land After a Buried Bone Is Removed

The full purification done where a bone has been dug out, the land's equivalent of the rites after a death: vastu registry with five coconuts, removal of the affected soil, agni sanskar with mango wood, water, gomutra and cow-dung purification, lime and sulphur, a 24-hour lamp and mercury.

What it does

To clear the soil chemistry and spirit influence left by a buried bone so the land can be built on and used safely.

Where

The spot where the bone was found, the surrounding soil, and the four corners of the plot

When

After the bone has been dug out and before construction or use

Samagri used

  • Coconuts, 5, for the vastu registry
  • Mango wood pieces (aam ki lakdi) for 16 places, or 32 or 45
  • Ghee, 2 to 5 drops on each wood piece
  • Camphor (kapoor)
  • Bricks to rest the wood on (optional)
  • Water for jal shuddhikaran
  • Gomutra (cow urine)
  • Cow dung (gobar)
  • Lime (choona)
  • Sulphur (gandhak)
  • Diya (lamp) that can burn for 24 hours
  • Mercury, a small amount

How to do it

  1. 1Do a vastu registry with five coconuts: one in each of the four corners (vidishas) and one at the spot where the bone came out
  2. 2Remove the soil over at least a 10 x 10 ft area around the bone spot, 5 ft from the centre towards North, South, East and West, down to the depth where the bone lay, and throw it away
  3. 3Also remove 1 to 1.5 ft of soil below the level at which the bone lay
  4. 4Do agni sanskar: place mango wood pieces in 16 zones (or 32 or 45 places) over the soil, put 2 to 5 drops of ghee and some camphor on each, and burn them, resting them on bricks if needed
  5. 5Collect the ash and float it in flowing water
  6. 6Purify the land with water while chanting the mantra (jal shuddhikaran)
  7. 7Sprinkle gomutra and plaster the ground with cow dung
  8. 8Put lime and sulphur into the spot where the bone came out
  9. 9Light a lamp beside that spot and keep it burning for 24 hours
  10. 10Mix a little mercury into the soil throughout and put mercury in all four corners so the expelled spirits do not return
  11. 11If you wish, perform the 16 sanskars of the land afterwards

Cautions

  • Never put the ash of the agni sanskar back into the soil; float it in flowing water
  • If the shilanyas was done before the bone was found, it is broken (khandit); purify again and redo the shilanyas and garbh vinyas before running the building or industry
  • Removing the bone without purification leaves the land harmful

Explanation and notes

When a person dies in a house, the whole house is purified, and the land where a bone lay needs the same rites; if they are skipped, the land will bring a teesra (death rite) to the owner instead. Agni sanskar is the biggest purification. This is the short method; the 16 sanskars can be added later. Just as all unbaked clay pots in a house are broken after a death because of sutak, a shilanyas done on such land falls under sutak and must be redone. Hundreds of cases are known where building on such land without purification ruined the owners.

Principleशल्य दोष

Buried Bones (Shalya) Ruin Peace, Health and Business

A bone buried in a plot is the biggest land defect (shalya). It changes the chemistry of the surrounding soil, becomes a home for spirits and slowly destroys the peace, health and business of whoever builds there.

Principleशल्य

Other Shalya: Buried Furnace, Coal, Ash, Fossils and Kaudi

Besides bones, coal, ash, some animal fossils and kaudi in the ground act as shalya. A furnace (bhatti) left buried under a building ruins the family and the business, and kaudi must never be buried, although gomti chakra can be.

Principleकोणों का ढकना

Never Bury a Plot Corner Under a Heavy Mass

The corners of a plot are its biggest sources of energy, and energy flows diagonally from corner to corner through the brahmasthan like a highway. Piling or filling a huge mass over a whole corner zone creates a serious defect.

Principle

Read Directions by Exact Degree Before Moving Anything

On tilted plots, directions and zones must be read in degrees with a compass. Vedic vastu never says to treat any corner as Ishaan or to accept a direction however tilted it is, and a wrong reading leads to costly and harmful changes.
