East: stairs are the heaviest structure and block the Sun's rays, causing loss of social activity. ESE and SE: light stairs allowed, only from ground to first floor, never continuing to all floors or into a basement. SE and SSE: moderate. South: name and prosperity. SSW: excellent. SW: very good. WSW: good. West: good. WNW: very good. NW: good. NNW: reduces love, affection and vatsalya. North: suppresses Mercury and ends career magnetism and opportunities. NNE: damages health. NE: destroys health, wealth and peace. ENE: very bad. These rules are for stairs above road level; basement stairs follow separate rules.
Interior work is done to change the mind, because everything follows from the mind. Pictures, colours and objects (chitra) change the state of mind (chitt), so the goal the mind should be led to must be fixed first.

Each direction is the seat of a planet with its own metal; keeping that metal in that direction captures and multiplies the planet's energy there and neutralises negative energy.
