Principle

Vedic Cycle of the Five Elements from the Shiv Puran

Space creates air, air creates fire by friction, cooling fire creates water, water over ages becomes earth (sedimentary rock), and earth returns to space; interior vastu follows this Vedic cycle, not the feng shui cycle.

What it does

Shows which element creates and which destroys another, so that anti-element combinations can be avoided.

Cautions

  • Do not follow the commonly memorised cycle (water creates air, air creates fire, fire creates earth, earth creates space); only earth creating space is correct in it

Explanation and notes

Per the Shiv Puran: first came space; winds arose in space; colliding winds produced sparks of fire by friction; fire slowly cooling formed drops of water; water collecting in the ocean, through erosion, lithification and diagenesis over millions of years, became stone and sedimentary rock, the earth element; earth evaporates back into space. Use this cycle to know which element generates which and which element destroys which.

Avoid Fly Ash Bricks: Ash Is Treated as Shalya

Bricks made from thermal plant fly ash mixed with sand and adhesive materials are wrong according to Vedic vastu, which likens ash (raakh) to shalya (an impurity such as bones buried in land).
