A mandna is a traditional drawn figure whose shape and colours pull cosmic energy and create a field of energy, so each element has its own mandna to balance an imbalanced zone. They work in industrial, commercial and residential buildings.

Paintings split into joined pieces, dry or cut trees, cut photos, mirrors touching the floor, swastik or Om on the floor, crying women, screaming animals, scenes of anger, crime or the Mahabharata, and God without feet should not be kept at home.

The teacher left it to the students; their suggestions, a mango leaf swastik toran and a toran of cow-dung cakes, were both called correct. He then gave his best (Kohinoor) bandhanwar for any wrongly placed door: make round discs of desi cow dung, draw a swastik on each, fix them on a bandhanwar strip and hang it on the main door, and the defects end. The alternative, a daily desi cow-dung lepan in front of the main door with a rangoli in the colour of its zone, is hard to keep up every day, so the permanent bandhanwar is better.
Mandnas that contain a swastik or Om must never be made on the floor; mandnas are made on walls, while rangoli is made on the floor. Traditionally they were made with leaf juices; today use water-based paints, or make them on an MDF sheet or canvas, or print and frame them.
