Method

Marking 16 Zones and 32 Devta Pads on a House Plan with a Protractor

Place a protractor on the house plan aligned to North, adjusting for any tilt, and mark the 4 directions, the 4 sub-directions at 45 degrees and 8 further sub-directions at 22.5 degrees. For a house use the 81-pad layout, in which the 32 outer devtas each cover 11.25 degrees and N5, E5, S5 and W5 fall exactly on the cardinal points.

What it does

Identifies which zone and devta pad every room, door and activity of the house falls in.

Where

House plan, from the centre of the house

Samagri used

  • House plan (naksha)
  • Kundali of the grih swami
  • Protractor; an ordinary geometry protractor works
  • Pencil and ruler

How to do it

  1. 1Sit with the house plan and the owner's kundali
  2. 2Find the facing of the house: straight (0 degrees) or tilted left or right, and by how many degrees
  3. 3Place the protractor's North on the plan's North; if North is tilted 10 or 20 degrees toward East or West, tilt the protractor by the same angle from the centre line
  4. 4Mark the four directions 90 degrees apart, the sub-directions at 45 degrees and the further sub-directions at 22.5 degrees to get 16 zones
  5. 5Divide each side into 8 devta pads of 11.25 degrees: N1 to N8, E1 to E8, S1 to S8, W1 to W8
  6. 6Draw the lines, or note the zone in which each room, door, kitchen and other activity falls

Cautions

  • For a house use the 81-pad division, not the 64-pad division used for temples
  • In 64-pad vastu North falls between N4 and N5, not on N5

Explanation and notes

The 16 zones arise because sun rays (cosmic energy) and underground (geopathic) energy combine into a third energy in each direction, giving every zone its own properties. The right activity, colour, planet-related artifacts, statues, showpieces and symbols are placed according to those properties so that the five elements balance. The 81-pad rule for houses is given in Vishwakarma Prakash. In 81-pad, the East zone covers part of E4, E5 and part of E6. Vedic texts did not use the word zone; any term is fine if the characteristics of each direction are understood.

Principle

Basis of Interior Planning: Goal, Kundali, Current Flow and Planet Yogas

Before any interior, fix the goal of the space, study the owner's kundali, check the current (energy) flow and base every arrangement, colour and artifact on planet combinations. Harmful yogas of the kundali must never be recreated with artifacts, while good yogas should be built.

Principleचित्र से चित्त

Chitra se Chitta: Pictures and Portraits at Home Shape Emotions

Interior vastu is emotion and action controlled by the interior: what the eye sees daily at home changes the mind. Pictures of God and loving family scenes bring good thoughts, while vulgar, violent or sorrowful images change emotions at once.

Principleतत्व मैत्री

Element Friendship and Enmity Chart (Tatva Maitri) for Interiors

Humans are made of four working elements, water, earth, fire and air; nobody belongs to the space element alone. Water and earth are friends, fire and air are friends, water and fire are enemies, earth and air are enemies, while water-air and earth-fire are sam-mitra (neutral friends).

Principle

Element Matching for Marriage, Business Partnership and Friendship

The element friendship chart is also the basis of compatibility: two people of the same element or of friendly elements (water with earth, fire with air) keep a heart-to-heart bond. Compare the rashi elements of both before a marriage, partnership or close friendship.

Testingजन्म राशि से तत्व

Finding Your Element from the Moon Sign (Janma Rashi)

A person's element comes from the janma rashi, the rashi number written with the Moon (Cha) in the kundali. Writing the 12 rashis in order under Fire, Earth, Air and Water gives each element three rashis.
