Cautions

  • The kitchen door must not face South; fire into fire can cause a fire
  • Never leave the kitchen without a door; an outsider's eyes carry the fire element and can turn food toxic
  • Do not build the platform in the centre of the kitchen or the kitchen in the centre of the house
  • Keep fire and water at least 4 feet apart
  • No toilet in front of, behind, beside, above or below the kitchen (all six sides)
  • No mirror or mirror-polished tiles; the reflection of fire is improper
  • No artifacts or statues representing the water element
  • No dug well, borewell or underground tank below the kitchen and no overhead tank above it
  • The kitchen must not be visible straight from the main door

Explanation and notes

Traditional view given in class: food may spoil if seen or cooked by women in ritual impurity.

Principle

Which Planet Rules Which Household Objects

Planets act most strongly on particular objects: the Moon on white objects and liquids, the Sun and Mars on fire, light and electricity, Mars also on floors and land, Saturn on metal, dug land and machines, Jupiter on temples and the tijori, Venus on luxury objects and Mercury on TV, telephone and electronics.
