Home Temple Rules: West Facing East, Small Shikhar, No Hanging Idols

The best place for a home temple is the West with the deities facing East, as in the great temples; SW and WSW also work, and a Saraswati temple suits WSW. Keep the shikhar small, never hang consecrated idols, and stand elephant figures on a solid base.

How to do it

  1. 1Place the temple in the West, or in the SW or WSW, with the deities facing East
  2. 2Keep only a small shikhar (dome) on a small home temple
  3. 3Keep pran-pratishthit (consecrated) idols on a firm base, never hanging
  4. 4Stand any elephant figures of the temple on a solid surface, not hanging in the air

Cautions

  • Consecrated idols must never hang
  • No big dome or shikhar on a small home temple
  • A temple with elephant figures should go to the West rather than the NE
  • No temple or puja room in SE, NW, WNW or NNW

Explanation and notes

God always sits at a heavy place. The NE is best left open, as it is itself as sacred as a temple; a puja room in WNW brings unrest, in NW a distracted mind and in NNW poor concentration.
