Principle

Facing of the Deity and the Worshipper in the Home Temple

The deity faces East first and North second, never South; the worshipper faces North for wealth, East for spiritual progress and South or West for tantra, and before a consecrated idol all directions become zero.

What it does

Sets the correct direction of idols and of the person worshipping, including during Diwali puja.

Where

Home temple, puja room and festival puja

How to do it

  1. 1Place the deity facing East as first priority, so that the Sun himself bows at the Lord's feet; North is the second choice
  2. 2For goddesses (devi) and yakshini forms, use the West, which is their abode
  3. 3For worship aimed at wealth (artha), sit facing North
  4. 4For spirituality, sadhana and self-welfare, sit facing East
  5. 5For tantra and mantra practices, face South or West
  6. 6For Diwali puja, seat the deity in the West facing East and sit so that you look at the deity while facing North

Cautions

  • A consecrated deity or its photo should never face South; South is the facing for photos of departed ancestors
  • A deity facing South with the worshipper facing North during Diwali puja is wrong
  • A West-facing mandir is only moderate

Explanation and notes

Direction belongs to the Lord: in a classroom the teacher's direction matters, not the students'. When you face a consecrated idol, all directions bow at the Lord's feet and become zero; direction is small and the Lord is great. So a small mandir on a study table may face East, and you sit before it facing North. A temple in a wrong zone can be treated: merely correcting the deity's direction corrects one's condition. For a puja room in the SE, move a consecrated idol; if the idol is not consecrated there is no need to worry, as these rules are for consecrated idols. Paintings and decorative idols also represent planets and should be placed correctly.

Toilet Effects in Each of the 16 Zones

Zone-by-zone results of a toilet: SSW and WNW are workable, NW and ESE only in an emergency, and every other zone damages what that zone governs.
