A picture changes the mind, so a painting can create a dosh. A painting of a tree, mountain, river, road or pillar facing the main door acts as a dwar vedh, water scenes do not belong on South, West or SW walls, and mountain scenes do not belong on the North wall.
If the sleeping zone cannot be changed, changing the direction of the feet gives about 50 percent of the benefit. Feet towards North is best, West is second, East only for children and early risers, and South never.
Grid the kitchen from its own centre and place items by zone: the refrigerator in SE, South, West or ideally NW, spices in the South, knives and cutlery in the SW, drinking water in NNE or ENE and the vegetable basket in the East.
West is the ideal dining zone because Varun gives coolness and taste; WSW, North, NNE, East, SSE and South also support eating, while ESE, SE, SSW and WNW disturb it.
The deity faces East first and North second, never South; the worshipper faces North for wealth, East for spiritual progress and South or West for tantra, and before a consecrated idol all directions become zero.
Medicines kept in the NNE are charged by the healing rays of that zone; the North, NE, ENE and West also work, but never a cupboard or drawer that faces South.
Each zone favours a particular kind of office: East for administration, North for finance, West for engineering and profit, WSW for every office, SW for employment and stability and ENE for media.
Files of bills awaiting payment face North, important files go to the West, WSW, North or NE, the cheque book to the NNE and the locker to the West or South-West.
Each zone suits a particular worship: North for Saraswati and Ganesh, NNE for pranic sadhana, NE and East for meditation, South for Hanuman and Devi, West best of all, while SE, SSE and SSW suit no puja.
An exalted planet in the lagna chart of the owner opens his fortune through a door in the direction of that planet, while certain debilitated planets and conjunctions rule a direction out completely.
Large business doors and shop shutters often span two to four padas. When the favourable pada, for example S4, is fully included and open, the door gives the results of that pada.
E3, N4 and W4 are the three vipul sampada (abundant-wealth) doors. Virtual doors marked on these padas are heavily promoted, but they give only a tiny fraction of the result of an actually opened door.
In the West, W4 (Pushpadant) showers wealth and W5 (Varun) also gives wealth, while W1, W2, W3, W6, W7 and W8 bring short life, overspending, loss of money, government trouble, disease and a destructive mind.
Before doing an interior, get the birth chart analysed: heavy use of the colours, materials or showpieces of a debilitated (neech) planet becomes the biggest trouble, and items unknowingly put in a wrong zone can suddenly bring unrest, disease and failure.
A clock represents Mercury, so it is hung on the North wall; on other walls it delays work. Every home needs working clocks, never stopped ones, and a small running clock in the safe increases the effect of Mercury.
The belief that the North-West, West or South-West must have no greenery is wrong: plants can go in every direction, and a vastu expert should never get a tree cut but should plant auspicious trees beside it instead.
The West is the zone of Saturn and the place of Varun. Its interior uses light blue with white or ivory, black stone, blue sapphire, amethyst and iron, a tortoise, floodlights, bells and camel figures, and plants such as lotus and raatrani.
The shami represents Saturn and works powerfully when planted in a garden in the West, but it is the favourite tree of spirits, so it must never be grown inside the house or close to it.
A family photo should show everyone full length with smiling faces, and the faces of the living must turn to the North, the living direction; NNW suits family attraction, but the direction the faces look matters more than the wall.
Pictures of God should be complete with the feet clearly visible, never cut-outs; the deity should face North-East, while devis and devtas can face West.
A mirror deepens the surface it is on: on a wall it makes the space look extended, on the floor it creates a pit. Highly reflective tiles, marble or stone must not be used in the South to West zones or the Brahmasthan.
A rectangular plot is built up on three sides and open only on the West, so its energy is low. How can it be extended?
Do not extend it. Instead, place energy-giving items and capture the energy from all four sides to raise the energy level; this is covered in the energy chapter.
Our rented house had the South and West very low and the North and East high; my husband's work stopped and loans piled up. Our present house also slopes to the South with water collecting there. What can be done?
Such slopes explain the trouble. How to correct the slope fully, or partly when a full correction is not possible, is taught in the treatment classes. Slope plays a very big role: maintaining the slope alone removes about 50 percent of zone defects.
In Mumbai many buildings have a longer East-West axis. How is that energy balanced?
It can be balanced with methods taught later. A good immediate remedy is to place the deity in the exact West of the home so that it faces East; when the deity looks to the East, the direction corrects itself.
At what time does the West direction show its greatest energy?
After sunset. Its power is felt from sandhya kaal onward and increases as the night advances, which is why people do sadhana at night and worship Lakshmi at night for wealth.
If a house faces South or West, must its slope also be toward the South-West, as in many houses?
There are two types of slope, which will be covered again. If water flows underground toward the South, it is not a big defect: electricity and water move underground everywhere without regard to direction, so an underground flow against the ideal direction does not create a dosh. People living where underground water flows to the South and West are also found to be happy.
Does the centre taken from the boundary wall also decide where on the plot to construct?
Where to construct is taught later; for example, on a North-facing plot the building is placed in the South and West part. The pishach bhoomi is always left open on all sides. People abroad leave space all around and keep large backyards and live prosperously, while many people here leave no space at all for energy to come in.
My main door is on E4, yet since moving into this house I have had many money problems. Why?
First check whether the door is in plumb and level with a plumb line and water level, and whether a wall or another door stands in front of it. In this case the entrance was fine; the real cause was a full basement in the South and West portion, together with a problem in the North-East.
If the main door is on a negative pad, does a clockwise or anti-clockwise route to the boundary gate change its results?
Yes. A correctly placed door with an anti-clockwise (heen bahu) exit gives fewer good results than it should. A door on a negative pad such as E5 or E6, whose route runs clockwise to a gate on W4 or W5, gives much less negative effect than the pad alone would.
Is an overhead tank right in NNW, and should it be in the South-West or the North-West?
Not in NNW. An overhead tank can be built from the West up to the North-West; making it in the South-West, as many people do, is wrong. Build it in the North-West.
At a large scale it works: a city may have a river, lake or pond in its West, and a big industrial unit may have a large pond in the West, the place of Varun devta.
Must the house be at 0 degrees for a sarvatobhadra dwar?
By definition it is at 0 degrees with doors in all four directions, but it can be made otherwise too: build the doors on whichever pads fall on Pushpdant, Grihakshat, Bhallat and E4.
